[top five] weekly happenings

1. i secured my summer plans. it feels good to finally have this figured out. the reason i have solidified my plans is because i got a job! yeeesss.

2. in one of my classes, we had the option of getting an editorial published in order to be exempt from the final exam. today i got an editorial published :)

3. this past weekend was general conference. a good friend of mine said "it's like christmas for our spirits." amen, sister. in between sessions, my family and some friends went on a hike and got in the first water fight of the year. summer's a comin!

4. on sunday, sundance ended their ski season. this is bittersweet. mostly bitter. (sweet only because it means i made it through the entire season without any serious injuries!)

5. i cannot think of a fifth thing that happened this week with a significance equal to the ones above. maybe i should change the name of my blog??

top five things you should NOT purchase at a thrift store

    1. any type of under clothing: it is intelligent to make sure there is a layer (preferably thick) between the thrift store clothing item and your bare skin. sweaters? wear a shirt underneath and you're good to go. snow jumpsuits? go for it! but a bra/lingerie/jock strap? keep walking. act as though you did not even see it.

    2. sheets/other bedding: self-explanatory, i hope.

    3. makeup: ever heard of conjunctivitis? commonly known as pink eye. this poor lady made the sorry mistake of buying that discontinued, periwinkle eye shadow. but now the only color she will be wearing is pink. fleshy, swollen, itching pink. worth it?

    4. toothbrushes: who knows where that toothbrush has been? (refer to number 4)

    5. a beautiful perfectly new-looking purple electra beach cruiser: why? because its mine. Purple was stolen from me november 17th, 2010. i suppose you have permission to buy it, only if your sole intent is to surrender the dear bike back to its proper owner. me. any info on Purple is greatly appreciated.....THANKS! (to Purple: i know you are probably out there somewhere reading this. you are probably cold. i want you to know i miss you and i'll never forget you. make yourself known so you can be found. honk that horn. i will hear it and we will meet again.)

      five memorable childhood experiences

      1. the beaver club
        • until the ripe age of seven, i grew up in brigham city, utah. my next door neighbor was eric lewis. naturally, we were best friends. i remember one time in particular playing with him outside, in the summer, just before dinner. we were exploring the other side of eric's fence. this just happened to be the peterson's side yard, i was unaware of this at the time. i don't remember who spotted it first but it seemed like it had been built just for us. the beaver hut. picture, if you will, an igloo made out of purely sticks. there was a front entrance we would use to crawl in and the back opening had been partly caved in. it was time for dinner, so we would have to fix that the next day. within the following week, we had successfully fixed the rear entrance and carpeted the inside of the hut. we had also recruited the twins, dorie and dayley williams along with heather thompson from down the street. that was the beginning of 'the beaver club'. we'd call meetings pretty regularly. i am not sure what we would discuss at the meetings. then i moved. i am unaware if the club lived on or not. perhaps they still meet to this day. i'll request eric as a friend on facebook one of these days and ask him.
      2. eggs
        • growing up, my family had a rule where you were able to choose one meal that you did not have to eat. this was with the understanding that you would have to eat every single other meal. my one meal was FISH. i could not handle it. however, i also could not handle eggs (scrambled, fried, omelets, boiled, etc). we had eggs on a very regular basis. why i didn't chose fish, i still don't understand. but, i sure got creative in my various ways of "finishing" my eggs. the most memorable way was stuffing the eggs into my pocket and then later, when our meal was over, i would go to the bathroom, dump them into the toilet and flush any evidence.
      3. truth or dare in the back of the classroom (4th grade)
        • mrs. thomas and mrs. stevenson were the teachers. perhaps they never saw us because i don't remember ever getting in trouble. i also don't remember who the other girls are that we played with. i only remember jordan and stockton, if you know what i mean ;) we would sneak to the back of the classroom during clean up time and sit indian-style in a circle. i just remember we would ALWAYS choose dare and the dare was ALWAYS to hug one of the other people playing. we would play all the time. i am sure i hugged jordan and stockton each countless times. that is where i got my top hugging skills from. after all, practice makes perfect, right?
      4. natalie's toothbrush
        •  i used to fight most with my sister natalie. i remember one time she was mad at me and rubbed my toothbrush in soap. i didn't realize until the lather in my mouth was more soap foam instead of toothpaste. i cried to my dear mother and natalie got in trouble. a short while later, i got mad at natalie for who know's what. so, i took the liberty of rubbing her toothbrush all around the toilet's edge. under edge. i don't think she is aware i did that. and she still won't be until at least dec. 7th, 2011. happy mission nat!
      5. not wearing underwear
        •  i was young and late for a birthday party. i was old enough to dress myself but could not find any underwear. i did, however, find my favorite party dress. life was good for the entirety of the party. it wasn't until our family bbq that night when my choice finally caught up with me. i was swinging on our swing set while my family was sitting at the patio table directly in front of me. the underwear-less girl in a dress was happily swinging away until everyone was suddenly in an uproar. my dad called me down from the swing and i got sent to my room. i longingly watched the rest of the bbq from my bedroom window. i have not gone commando since.

      current top five songs

i often find myself listening to these songs while walking to or from campus. i am certain i am not alone in wishing my life had a soundtrack. my life actually does have a soundtrack, but only when i have my ipod in and even then everyone around me is unaware they are starring in my movie.
      1. black dirt- sea wolf
      2. welcome home, son- radical face
      3. yeah yeah yeah song- the flaming lips
      4. hard to concentrate- red hot chili peppers
      5. dance anthem of the 80's- regina spektor

      my top fives

after endless scrolling through my google reader i have come to the conclusion that many personal blogs consist of the exact same information. that information, however random it may be, must be at least somewhat interesting because i find myself reading those blogs time and time again. then i had this epiphany that there has got to be a more efficient way to get this "somewhat interesting" information. hence the birth of this blog. my posts will consist of five things that pertain to the topic of the post. and not just five things, they will usually be my top five things about... whatever. then we can be done with the topic and move on with life with minimal time wasted. brilliant, if you ask me. the posts may or may not be "somewhat interesting." i guess it all depends on the author and i would say it depends on the reader as well. okay, okay, okay. enough chitchat. ready, set, GO.
